Shopping local is more important than you might imagine. If you understand its impact, consider choosing local businesses over online retailers and big-box stores whenever possible.

When you shop at locally owned, independent businesses, several things happen at once. You support neighbors who own these businesses and help ensure that Trussville keeps its unique, practical and interesting shops open to the public. You also help keep tax dollars in the city, supporting roads, libraries, schools and many other community needs.

In addition, more money stays in the community when you shop locally. Studies show that approximately 68 cents of every dollar spent at a small business remains in the local economy, compared with about 43 cents of every dollar from a chain or big-box store. Local businesses also support schools, sports teams and many other organizations through donations and involvement.

Sitting in a room full of business owners who love this city so much was all this mama heart needed at the last chamber luncheon. The topic was shopping local. A panel of women-owned businesses answered questions from the audience, and it was so encouraging to see those women representing their businesses.

The main question — and one you may be asking, too — was: How can I help?

This effort is all about community education and a shift in perspective. Yes, big-box stores are easy and convenient. What isn’t convenient is your favorite store closing because we, as a community, kept meaning to stop by but never did. Here are some simple ways you can support your local business-owning friends and neighbors:

• Instead of buying Amazon gift cards, purchase gift cards from local businesses for your friends, family, teachers and neighbors.
• Like and share social media posts from local businesses. Consider choosing two or three you love and regularly supporting them online to help increase their visibility.
• Tell others about the importance of shopping locally. Someone you know may not realize the impact. Word of mouth makes a difference.
• Encourage your friends and family members who own small businesses. We are all working hard to bring our dreams to life in this community.
• Help spread awareness of shop-local efforts in Trussville.
• When possible, spend money at local businesses. Instead of immediately thinking of big-box stores, consider where you might find the item locally. Prices are often similar, sometimes slightly higher and occasionally even lower. Even when something costs a little more, it supports a local family and puts money back into your community.

At the heart of Trussville is its thriving community. Let’s work together to keep it that way.
