For more than seven decades, Trussville’s community pool has been a special part of our city. Originally opened in 1954, the pool is now 72 years old and has provided generations of families with a place to swim, gather, learn, and make lasting memories.

Few public facilities remain in active use for more than 50 years, and the longevity of this pool surpassing 70 reflects both its importance to our community and the dedication of the employees who have worked year after year to maintain it. However, the facility has now reached the end of its practical service life and will be closed after this season.

Each season requires significant repairs and maintenance simply to open and operate the pool safely. This year was no different. We also experienced substantial problems with the splash pad equipment, much of which has also reached the end of its useful life and required that area to remain closed for some time.

In addition to the ongoing maintenance challenges, the pool operates at a significant annual deficit. Because of the facility’s size, membership is limited, making it increasingly difficult to justify continued major investments in an aging facility that serves a relatively small portion of our growing community. After carefully reviewing the operational costs, maintenance needs, participation levels, and long-term condition of the facility, I have made the difficult decision that the pool will not reopen following the conclusion of this season so we can begin to save funds and prepare for the future of this facility.

While closing a facility with so much history is never easy, this decision also gives us an opportunity to begin planning for the future. The funds currently used for annual pool operations and repairs can instead be redirected and saved toward meaningful improvements for this area that will serve more residents and provide lasting value to the community.

As part of that process, I will seek the assistance of a professional landscape architect to develop a master plan for this area. That planning process will allow us to evaluate improvements that could better meet the needs of Trussville families for decades to come.

We are grateful for the generations of families who have enjoyed the pool since 1954, as well as the employees who have worked diligently to keep it operating. We look forward to engaging the community as plans for the future of this area begin to take shape.
